Last summer we had the delight of welcoming Julie Skentelbery and her producer Emma Gill to our Women’s Centre office in Bodmin to interview members of our staff about the work that we do here.
This was an opportunity for us to raise awareness of the issues many women and girls face and spread the word about our services in the hope it might reach more of those who need support.
BBC Cornwall generously offered us a whole morning of airtime and Julie’s brave and skilled journalism gave us ample opportunity to share about our work, including discussions on housing, reporting abuse to the police, the West Country Women’s Awards, supporting women in prison and our specialist therapeutic support.
The show did not shy away from taboo subjects, like the effect of pornography on young boys. Julie also interviewed a survivor of domestic and sexual abuse now working for The Women’s Centre who shared her story. The fight to end violence against women and girls takes all forms – opens conversations and difficult discussions can be powerful.
In the days following the broadcast, our helpline received calls from women who had heard about our work through the show and reached out as a result. Thank you to BBC Cornwall, Julie and Emma for helping these women find our services.

It was a pleasure to work with this warm and talented radio team and we are very grateful to them, the TWCC staff involved and West County Women’s Award for making the connections. Thank you all!
