POWER Programme

(Programme of Women's Empowerment and Recovery)

Who is this for? The POWER Programme is an educational, group-work programme for women survivors of sexual violence and abuse.

Where is it available? The POWER Programme is run in various locations throughout Mid, East and North Cornwall.

How often does it run / when is it available? The POWER Programme runs 3 times per year.  It is a 14-week programme, each weekly session lasting 2½ hours.  The sessions are normally only delivered during term time to make attendance easier for women with school-aged children.  There is a follow-on ‘catch-up’ session 4-6 weeks after the programme has ended.

Tell me more: The POWER Programme works through the stages of the "healing journey" which helps women to understand the impact of abuse on their lives and to reclaim their lives.

The course aims to provide a safe, nurturing environment that enables you to feel secure enough to explore and understand the issues you are experiencing around sexual violence.  We aim to support you in your healing and to empower you to feel ready to move forward and make positive changes to your life.

The course will help you:

  • reduce levels of shame and self-blame;
  • help you understand your triggers and develop healthy coping strategies;
  • increase your knowledge of personal rights and boundaries;
  • understand feelings such as grief and anger;
  • improve your self-worth, self-respect, confidence and self-esteem;
  • develop your assertiveness skills and help you feel empowered and in control of your own life;
  • reduce the isolation you may be experiencing.

How do I access this course?

The Women's Centre Cornwall currently only accepts referrals for the POWER Programme through Volunteer Support Workers who have supported women on a face-to-face basis: however, women waiting for face-to-face support in our area are sometimes also offered a place.  To enquire about face-to-face support and the POWER Programme, contact our Rape & Sexual Abuse Helpline on 01208 77099.
